Winfield Scott Biography

Winfield Scott (1786-1866) U.S. General. In 1847 he commanded the United States army in Mexico and bombarded and captured Vera Cruz, proceeding to Mexico City. In 1838 he supervised the removal of the Cherokee to a reservation. He ran for U.S. President in 1852 on the Whig Party ticket.
