King Phlip (c.1639-76). A famous Indian chief, son of Massasoit, whose Indian name was Metacomet. He was sachem of the Wampanoags, and after waging war against the colonists, Capt. Benjamin Church hunted Philip, finding him in a swamp near Mount Hope, where he was killed.
