Nero (37-68 A.D.) A Roman emperor (54-68 A.D.) "Nero himself was charged in ancient times with having been the incendiary [of Rome] (Tacitus, Annales, xv, 44); the charge has been often believed in modern days. It is said that he admired the spectacle from a distance, reciting verses about the burning of Troy, but many scholars are doubtful whether he really had any hand in it."
