MARTIN I, Saint, Pope 649-655. He was a martyr to his firm stand against monothelitism, which he caused to be condemned in the first Lateran Council. (See LATERAN COUNCILS.) In consequence he was seized by the Greek Emperor Constans II, who attempted to depose him and carried him off to the Crimea, where he died a prisoner.
