[Up] [Dromo's Den] William Francis Lynch Biography LYNCH,
William Francis (1801-65). An American naval officer, born in Norfolk, Va.
In 1848 he conducted a valuable official survey of the Jordan River and the Dead
Sea. He became commander in 1849 and captain in 1856, resigning in 1861 to enter
the Confederate service, in which he attained the rank of commodore. He
published Narrative of the United States Expedition to the River Jordan and the
Dead Sea (1849) and Naval Life, or
Observations Afloat and on Shore (1850). The New International
