Conrad Biography

CONRAD I (?-918). King of the Germans from 911 to 918. On the death of Lows the Child there was no Carolingian who had a legitimate claim to the throne in Germany. Consequently Conrad, who had some kinship with Arnulf, was elected. The sources for his election are few and conflicting, and consequently false statements about his origin have been readily accepted. Conrad favored and was supported by the Church, but could not command the obedience of the great dukes who were almost independent. He died Dec. 23, 918, and was buried at Fulda. On his deathbed he enjoined his brother to carry the royal insignia to his mortal enemy, Duke Henry of Saxony, with whom he had been continually at war since 912 A.D.
