Charles Martel (Fr., Charles the Hammer) (c.688-741). Mayor of the Palace under the last Merovingian kings, and the illegitimate son of Pepin. Charles defeated the Saracens led by Abd-er-Rahman near Poitiers in 732. Their defeat relieved an alarmed Christendom.
