Marcus Aurelius (121-180) Roman Emperor (161-180), Stoic philosopher. He persecuted the Christians beginning in 177. "No man ever labored more earnestly to make that heathen faith which he loved so well, and that heathen philosophy which he believed in so truly, a vital and dominant reality."
