Alfred the Great Image
Alfred, or Ælfred, the Great (848-900). King of Wessex from 871 to 900. In a reign that lasted nearly 30 years Alfred repelled Danish invaders and took great interest in education. The composition of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle may have been due to his initiative.
