Philip II (1527-1598) King of Spain from 1556 to 1598. During Philip's reign the Netherlands successfully rebelled, the Armada was destroyed by England in 1588, and the prosperity of Spain was ruined. He has also been accused of having instigated the Massacre of St. Bartholomew.
